Punch

Jab

The jab is a fast, straight punch thrown with your lead hand (the one closest to your opponent). It's the most-used punch in boxing because it controls distance, sets up power shots, disrupts rhythm, and keeps you safe. Coach Chris builds every beginner's foundation around a crisp, snapping jab.

How to do it

  1. 1Start in your stance, hands up, chin tucked.
  2. 2Extend the lead hand straight out, rotating the fist so the palm faces down on impact.
  3. 3Keep the rear hand glued to your cheek to protect your chin.
  4. 4Snap it back to guard immediately — don't leave it out.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the rear hand while jabbing.
  • Winding up or telegraphing the punch.
  • Leaning in off-balance instead of stepping.
